77" Pillar of Strength and Love

December 16, 2010

I find myself reflecting over the 2 decades of life I have shared with a big old mountain man from North Carolina/Tennessee.  The son of preacher man who has always been so steady in his beliefs it has brought great stability to my wishy washy life, as well as, led to daily  "passionate discussions".

Brad and I met in the Singles Sunday School Class at First Baptist of Alexandria Virginia where he  stood out, literally, measuring at 6'5" with a football player's build and an incredible intelligence.  I am a sucker for this sexy and smart man!   He was very soft spoken in the beginning and had eyes only for me from the very beginning, but I was stubborn.  I made him be my friend for a while as I recovered from a series of less than desirable dates, until finally he apparently stopped calling and I just happened to call to check up on my friend.  He invited me to his 25 birthday party where everyone referred to him as my boyfriend, and the rest is history.  ...
The car accident, the murder of my grandfather, the first attempts to get pregnant, children's illnesses, my near death following childbirth, numerous moves, and now the loss of our youngest child who looked exactly like his father.

I know that's a lot to take in, and I will discuss many of these moments at some point, but for now, I am amazed at how we have come together and served as one another's soft place to land.  We love to argue and give each other a hard time.  It challenges us, but it draws us closer.  We have always said divorce is not an option so now what?  We have always  worked together through all life throws our way...sometimes frankly, it was not pretty but we got to the end together.  Knowing neither of us plans on going anywhere gives the heart a place to land when it is broken into so many pieces.

Many men may sit on the peripheral of their home life, allowing life to go on around them, and then there is the man who has grown as a husband and father.  Who has been on the sidelines of so many games, who has sat through so many plays and musicals with a big smile on his face, and a man who when he comes through that door at night and puts away his keys is just happy to see you.  He's home!

Life is challenging and life can get ugly but there is still so much beauty in being surrounded by a pillar of strength and love.  God has truly blessed me with a great husband, best friend, and cohort in mischief and I love him with all the pieces of my heart.
