The Rescue

So this month we are looking for distraction.  It's the third holiday season without Josh and anything will do.  We were all sitting around the new couch when we heard 'stealth kitty" whimpering quietly.  We checked all the usual spots, under the table, in the closet, in the garage, but no kitty.

We eventually followed the soft whimpers up the stairs to the master bath area which is currently under construction.  We were soon on our hands and knees listening underneath the freshly laid cement board, and sure enough, the whimper was just beneath the floor.

What to do?  We called the renovation company.... I can just imagine what was going through the project manager's mind.  He receives a frantic call from one of his clients asking "our cat is stuck in the floor, should be put a hole in the kitchen ceiling below, or dig a hole through the freshly laid flooring?" He said to do whatever we felt was best and they would make the repairs.  Thanks!

I knew it wasn't practical, but my heart put all kinds of worries in my head.  Soon, panic became real and urgent. By this time, I was ready to take the sledge hammer and pound a hole in the floor with my brute strength (in my own mind at least).  Fortunately, Brad, aka... the practical one, slowly removed my tool of choice from my hands, and insisted on calmly chiseling a hole exactly the right size to let stealth kitty out.  45 minutes of directed chiseling soon produced a square hole approximately 5 inches by 5 inches.

My heart was racing the entire time for this poor little guy, and I could see Stephi was not any better.

Then it happened....the hole reached 5"x5", the chisel and hammer were pulled back just as stealth kitty POPPED out through the hole and said hello!  It was as though he had not just spent 8-10 hours in total darkness in a small cramped space.

We stood about sharing our concern for Stealth's long term mental state just as he  tried to jump back into the hole.  Sigh.......all that effort to save his life, was merely playtime for him!

We caught him by his long tail just in time and placed a heavy paint can over the hole because our hearts couldn't take another distraction like that.

The next day, the bathroom door was kept closed the entire time the men worked, the floor was repaired, and all remaining openings were sealed shut so we could have a wonderfully distraction-free evening.

Ya never know when one of those extraordinary moments will become one of life's funny memories,  and in this case it took exactly one night's sleep to turn a scary moment into a belly giggle story.

Curiosity has certainly led this little guy into quite a few predicaments, but try as hard as he might, he somehow always comes out perfectly fine and greeted with lots of hugs and kisses from a teenage girl who loves him dearly.

It is that love that we are so thankful for!

Hugs,
Sherri
